FPInnovations has completed one experimental burn in stand that was treated using stand-cleaning, and this was in a pine stand. This one documented fire is not sufficient to determine the effectiveness of the treatment in pine stands, but it did provide valuable insights. Stand cleaning includes the removal of standing and down dead fuels, pruning live stems and the removal of some understory and shrubs. The objective of the treatment is to reduce the amount of fuels available to burn and provide fire managers options when wildfire approaches. More research plots are planned in the NWT.
