Abstract

Over the past decade, several experimental fires in mulched fuel have yielded valuable insights into –
1. fire behaviour in a mulched fuelbed,
2. how a mulched fuel treatment area can moderate an approaching high intensity crown fire, and
3. how varying mulching intensity can impact treatment productivity and potential fire behaviour.

Unit 1 and Unit 4 at the Pelican Mountain FireSmart Fuel Management Research site have been prepared as mulched fuel treatments and are scheduled for burning when weather conditions permit. At the spring 2021 advisory meeting, members suggested that this project be reviewed and (possibly) concluded once the experimental burns at Pelican Mountain have been completed.
