There are many different types of ignition devices available to wildland firefighting agencies. Some devices are engineered and some are prototypes of local ideas and innovation. Knowledge and experience with these ignition devices is gained through training and actual field application; however, little has been done to document individual device advantages and/or disadvantages, or to qualify where and when these tools are best used. The study will involve creating an ignition device inventory, conducting field trials, and documenting device advantages and disadvantages. The goal is to establish an information matrix which can assist practitioners in determining the most effective ignition device over a range of applications.
