Abstract

Alberta Agriculture and Forestry contracts helicopter companies with infrared scanners to locate burning embers in the final stages of fire mop-up. These embers are referred to as “hotspots” and can result in a fire restart if not detected and extinguished. Before AAF contracts helicopter companies for scanning operations, they must demonstrate an ability to find and map hotspots on a grid in Hinton as part of a qualification process. Currently, hotspot targets on the grid are a possible source of unintended wildfire. ESRD requires simulated hotspots that can be used on the grid in Hinton that are not a fire hazard.
