Abstract

Three video-based wildfire smoke detection systems were evaluated in Alberta and Saskatchewan during the summer of 2003. Two of the systems used computer vision to help an operator identify smoke, and the third system relied on an operator to monitor remotely generated images.

We evaluated the systems in terms of their smoke-detection capabilities and their suitability to Alberta’s and Saskatchewan’s fire management programs.
